GIVE ME A SIGN

A tweep submitted Psalm 86:17 on twitter today and I was amazed at this scripture. I don’t remember seeing this scripture before. “Give me a sign Lord”. Wow. I grew up in “Christiandom” where it was sacrilegious to ask God for a sign. They even quoted the scripture, “A wicked and adulterous generation requires a sign” Matthew 12:39a. and nobody wants to be counted in that number. But here is David, a man after God’s own heart, asking, Give me a sign Lord.

I don’t know about you saints, but I will admit that while we are “working” in the vineyards at the heat of the day it would be nice to get a cold refreshing drink of the water of knowledge that our labor is not in vain. In the mist of the enemies prospering, the “water” of “I will be exalted if I faint not” would be fantastic. So Lord, how can we get this “water”?

We have to do what David did in verse 4 of Psalm 86-he set his hope in the Lord. When I think of "set" in this context it makes me think of permanence, like concrete. Once it’s it place (set) it is unmovable, unchangeable. But David didn’t stop there. In verse 5, David says that the Lord is ready to forgive and abound in faithful love to all who call on him.

Wow! If we could be like David, set our hope on the Lord and know that He is overflowing in faithful love to us who call on Him, we would be freed up enough to say:

Lord give me a sign of your goodness that my enemies will see and be ashamed because you Lord have helped me and comforted me. Psalm 36:17

That’s it right there!!!
